You are an aide for the UN Refugee Agency, preparing to travel with Angelina Jolie to Santiago, Chile. You have been asked to assist Ms. Jolie on her visit to Santiago while she meets with local and national government officials and talks with the victims of the disaster.

To prepare for this assignment, research the earthquake disaster in Chile to help Ms. Jolie decide which areas of the country to focus on and what help is needed from the United Nations. Prepare a "talking paper" about one area that deserves UN attention with 3 major points explained, and give each point a title. Present visual aides to help her understand the need. Present your talk to the class in preparation for presenting it to Ms. Jolie.

Group project:
You and your partners have an entire day filled with frustrating, but minor emergencies. Tell each other what the problems are and get useful advice in order to overcome your problems. This project must have cue cards submitted 3 days prior to the presentation, and a written script submitted to the teacher at the time of presentation and must have a visual aid presented that is big enough to be seen from any place in the classroom. No more than 4 people in a group, please, and all group members must speak.

Individual project:
Write and present a short magazine article about great places to go during a gap year. This article must be no less than 5 paragraphs and no more than 7. Vocabulary and grammar learned throughout the course must be included. A first draft must be submitted to the teacher for review not later than January 18th, with the final draft and cue cards submitted not later than Monday, January 25th. This article will be accompanied by a visual aid that is big enough to be seen from any place in the classroom.

American Tall Tales

Tall tales began in the 1800's as a way for pioneers to understand the greatness of the American west. There were huge forests, ferocious animals, deserts, and mountains. The pioneers were trying to conquer these elements, and that was a scary business. The heroes and heroines in the tall tales were also huge and often ferocious. They made the taming of America a little easier to handle.

Some of the heroes and heroines in tall tales are real people like Davy Crockett and Johnny Appleseed. Their stories got exaggerated a lot. Other tall tale characters were not real people. Characters included sea captains, loggers, railroad workers, cowboys, and firefighters. Tall tale tellers combined information about what was really happening at the time with wild tall tale fantasy.

There were a few bad things about tall tales. In general, they were very negative towards African Americans, Native Americans, women, and animals. They also took a pretty dim view of the enviornment. After all, the people in the tales were trying to conquer the wilderness of American. The best way to do that, they thought, was to cut down every tree in sight, take whatever land they needed, and use people to help the country grow. We know today that the approach used in the nineteenth century was not a good one.

Some of the tall tales you'll read will be a little bit more human than others. There is still some violence, but that was part of America in the 1800's. The tall tales you'll read will have great metaphors and similes. The amount of exaggeration is immense, but that's what makes them fun to read. Go Ahead Now..., Read, Learn, Laugh, and Imagine!

AUTONOMOUS LEARNING PROJECT (ALP) ORIENTATION

Autonomous Learning Projects are intended to encourage the student to explore the English language in a context that is outside of the classroom. Your project should be creative and original, and should include the language learned in the classroom.

In order to earn a total of 3 points, your project needs all of the following:

1) to be presented in a logical way
2) to be presented in your OWN WORDS (not an internet translation)
3) to be presented with an original visual aid, such as a poster, thought bubbles, puppets, or video
4) to have a understandable, clear, and accurate delivery
5) to show preparation and practice.

Your Project is worth 3 points – as much as your oral exam! Start now in your preparation.

1) Schedule meetings with your project group members.
2) Decide what your project will be about.
3) Assign tasks to each member.
4) Consult teachers, dictionaries, other students, books, and internet resources for help and ideas.

DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MOMENT TO TRY TO CREATE A PROJECT.

Your project information for this month is as follows:

Basic 10:

Choose only one of the following:

1. You are the owner of a beauty salon. Your clients are in need of a makeover. Give them your advice and show us the results of their change in style! Use could, should, ought to, and had better to give advice.

2. You are a fortune teller. Your clients need to know the future. Tell them your predictions using future verb tenses.

Intermediate 3:

Choose only one of the following:

1. You are an active participant in extreme sports. Tell about your experiences and adventures with your sport. Tell how your life has changed since getting involved with extreme sports. Include the present perfect continuous and the present perfect.

2. Your neighborhood needs to be improved because of several problems. Identify the problems and convince your neighbors and local town council that improvements need to be made. Use future factual conditionals – and a fortune teller, if necessary! – to convince them.

Intermediate 2:

Choose only one of the following:

1. You are searching for a girlfriend or boyfriend, but have been unable to find a good match for yourself. You’re just too busy with school, homework, work, and family commitments! So you decide to try speed dating at the local disco. You must spend 3 minutes interviewing each person to find your Mr. or Miss Right.

2. You and a friend are traveling in a foreign country, but you don’t speak much of the local language. You’re tired and hungry and need to order food in a restaurant and get a room in hotel for the night. Overcome the language barrier!
